down/ commentary

CIMG1949

Don’t get me wrong: What happened in Ukraine is terrible and I feel with those now mourning for their husbands, wives, friends and so on. And I know, from personal experiences, how difficult working as a journalist can be, particular in situations like this, but let me write down two questions:

Would you pay so much attention if the victims weren’t primarily European?

And since when it is called journalism simply digging into Facebook-profiles of people who just died (and I don’t think you ask the families for permission of using those pictures and comments)?

    1. no! but it is also very much “fun” because
a: it is the same company who lost a flight few month back
b: it is a “story”. a civilian plane brought down by a missile isn’t every week story
the same way it caught the “eyes of the worlds” when the same firma lost the last plane.

    2. no! it isn’t
but that is almost the most any journalist is doing this days.
(not all – most) and any way journalism isn’t that romantic story of the early 20th century. It is a story of power and control. The writings reflects almost entirely the direction/political or economical powers the owner/editor supports.

    sad

    fuck this world

O I think it did. I think some still holds to it.

and yes… they should make some dark spell ceremony or something.

    and yes. it does sucks

listen to Vivaldi RV 580 – really better than reading the Bild

  4. thanks for your comment! I think it has a lot to do with the facts that stories combined with faces/ personal content are believed to sold more; how is the media coverage in Asia about the plane crash?

    • not media ethics in this narrow sense – there are “Nachrichtenfaktoren” /”news values” that, connected to the topic, make the story more likely to appear in the news. Such as who is involved (anyone prominent or at least coming from the same country), something unusual (tragedies), etc. Here’s a short overview/ definition to start with: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/News_values

Thanks for the info on the converage and the link!

      • can’t say neither how accurate the news values are followed – ending my studies like 4 years ago, I’m not really up-to-date when it comes to research but I guess it als depends a lot on the story itself and the individuel background of the newspaper/ radio station, etc.
